Proceeding to the check out with a fully loaded trolley (Aussie for “grocery cart”), one used to mentally prepare for the age old question, “Paper or plastic?”
I can remember when, as a child, requesting paper received a sneer. It was encouraged then to ask for plastic in order to “Saving the Trees!”
Today, as an adult, paper isn’t even an available option. The plastic grocery bags which quickly became a norm, praised so early on for saving the rain forests, are now facing extinction, too. The new rally cry is “Go Green!”
Making the national news yesterday, the new choice was presented…either boxes or reusable bags. Shoppers were interviewed after check out how they will cope without plastic grocery bags. Comments kept to the positive side, agreeing such a change would be good for the environment. Though, still managing to mention the usefullness of these plastic gems:
- trash bags
- nappies (diapers)
- pet clean up
Presenting a good question:
What will be used in place of plastic for such chores?
Now, I’m not totally against the reusable bag. In fact, I use them myself for grocery shopping here in Australia. And, I’m glad for them, too. You should see how many items the clerks cram into the plastic bags! I shop with a reusable bag for its sturdiness more than anything else. Shopping with a banana box is a bit awkward, especially when one walks home from the shops. So, I choose the reusable shopping bag.
Personally, I will miss the plastic bag…just like I missed the paper bag…it, also good for many things besides carrying groceries. Perhaps, the plastic bag won’t completely disappear. I know of one store back home in Michigan still offering, “Paper or plastic?” I just want to say to them, “Thanks!”

Your information are very good.I like it.

I can totally see you carrying all your purchases down the street in your big green bags!! Love you-Heid
We still have “Paper or Plastic?” here. Buuut… One grocery store is now offering the reusable bags. So now we have “three” choices!
I have bought a few of the reusable bags to carry library books, toys for the kids we visit peoples homes, etc.
But I agree, I like the plastic for the other reasons. I put wet bathing suits in them, use them in the bathroom trashcans, take things to people in them. I sure hope they don’t get rid of them here! Probably will though.
I am having fun reading the different words that Australians use. Very fun!
Not that I’m impressed a lot, but this is a lot more than I expected when I found a link on Delicious telling that the info here is quite decent. Thanks.
